Slacker takes place over a single day in Austin, Texas, following a loosely connected chain of young people who drift through the city. Among them are a man who shares his theories about dreams with an unresponsive taxi driver, a woman trying to sell Madonna's Pap smear to passersby, and an older anarchist in search of new followers. The film moves from one character to the next, with each encounter leading into the following one, building a portrait of a bohemian community rather than a conventional plot.
Richard Linklater directed, wrote and produced the film, which was his first feature and the beginning of a long career behind the camera; his next film as director was Dazed and Confused in 1993. The large credited cast of 98 includes Rudy Basquez as the taxi driver, Jean Caffeine, Jan and Stephan Hockey, and Mark James, with Linklater himself appearing as a man at a bus station. The low-budget independent production was made by Detour Filmproduction and grossed about 1 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7/10 from roughly 25,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.7/10 from around 350 votes, and it received a critics' rating of 7.3/10 from 45 reviews, placing it in similar territory to its audience scores.
