Duel at Diablo

In the Arizona desert, Jess Remsberg, a former Army scout, rides into trouble while searching for the man he believes killed his Apache wife. He frees Ellen Grange, a white woman who had been living with an Apache band, and returns her to her husband, Willard. Remsberg then takes work guiding a cavalry detachment and a wagon train across Apache land toward a distant fort, with a horse trader named Toller among the travellers. The journey brings the group under attack, and the truths Remsberg has been chasing turn out to lie closer to home than he expected.

Ralph Nelson directed the film, which was released in June 1966 and followed seven earlier features in his filmography, among them Requiem for a Heavyweight, Lilies of the Field and Father Goose. The screenplay was written by Michael M. Grilikhes and Marvin H. Albert, and the picture was produced by Fred Engel, Nelson and star James Garner. Garner plays Remsberg, with Sidney Poitier as Toller, Bill Travers as the officer McAllister, and Bibi Andersson and Dennis Weaver as Ellen and Willard Grange. Thirty performers are credited.

Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 across roughly 4,900 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.4 out of 10 from about 122 votes, numbers that suggest a Western appreciated by genre followers rather than a broad modern audience. The film runs 105 minutes.
