Barefoot Gen

Set in Hiroshima during the final stages of World War II, this animated drama follows a young boy named Gen Nakaoka. His family struggles with poverty and government pressure due to his father's pacifist views. While the city had previously avoided major air raids, the lives of the citizens are irrevocably changed when an atomic bomb is dropped on August 6, 1945. The story focuses on the devastating aftermath of the explosion and Gen's efforts to support his surviving mother and unborn sibling.

Directed by Mori Masaki, this was the second film in his career, following Drifting Clouds and preceding Space-Time Traveler - Time Stranger. The screenplay was written by Keiji Nakazawa, who also served as a producer. The voice cast includes Issei Miyazaki as Gen, Masaki Kouda as Shinji, and Seiko Nakano as Eiko. The production involved multiple companies, including Madhouse and Mushi Production.
