The Fox and the Hound

The Fox and the Hound follows a young fox named Tod who is taken in by a kind widow, Widow Tweed, and a hound puppy named Copper who is raised by the hunter Amos Slade. The two animals become close companions while young, unaware that the lives chosen for them will eventually set them against each other. As Copper is trained for hunting and Tod grows into a fox, their friendship is tested by the roles they are expected to fill.

Released in 1981 by Walt Disney Productions, the animated feature was directed by Ted Berman, Art Stevens and Richard Rich. For Berman it came before The Black Cauldron, while Stevens had previously directed The Rescuers; for Rich it was the first of 13 films he would direct, followed by The Black Cauldron. The voice cast includes Mickey Rooney as Tod, Kurt Russell as Copper, Pearl Bailey as Big Mama, Jack Albertson as Amos Slade, Sandy Duncan as Vixey and Jeanette Nolan as Widow Tweed. The film runs 82 minutes.

Made for around 12 million dollars, it took roughly 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from about 110,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 7.2 out of 10, from some 3,592 votes; a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 28 reviews places it somewhat lower than the audience scores. The film is based on Daniel P. Mannix's novel.
