The Rock Speaks

The Rock Speaks is a hybrid documentary that examines the global supply chain of cobalt, a rare earth mineral vital for modern technology. The film follows the movement of this metal from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the world's primary producer, through to international stock markets. By highlighting the contrast between the violent labor conditions in Congolese mines and the global demand for tech components, the work reflects on the resulting ecological crisis and exploitative working practices.

The film was directed and written by South African artists Amy Louise Wilson and Francois Knoetze, who also served as producers alongside Anna Giralt Gris. They collaborated with Congolese historian Joe-Yves Salankang Sa-Ngol to develop the project. This seven-minute production was a joint effort between Spain and South Africa, produced by Lo-Def Film Factory and Artefacto Films. It was released on February 8, 2025.
