Short description

In 1963 Wyoming, two young cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, are hired to spend the summer herding sheep on Brokeback Mountain. Isolated together in the wilderness, their growing companionship turns into an intimate relationship. When the season ends, the two part ways and try to build conventional lives: Ennis marries Alma, and Jack marries Lureen. Years later they meet again, and the connection from that summer proves impossible to leave behind, shaping the choices and difficulties of the lives they have made away from the mountain.

The film is a drama and romance directed by Ang Lee, the ninth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Hulk and Lust, Caution, and based on a screenplay by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry, who also produced with James Schamus. Heath Ledger plays Ennis and Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jack, with Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid and Linda Cardellini among the cast.

Released in 2005, the film cost about 14 million dollars and took roughly 178 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It holds a 7.7 rating on IMDb from around 415,000 votes and a 7.8 on TMDB from far fewer votes, while the critics' rating of 8.6 from 263 reviews sits noticeably higher than either audience score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of the July 4th (Independence Day) celebration scene in Fort Macleod, extras were instructed to behave as if their hometown hockey team, the Calgary Flames, had just won the Stanley Cup.
  • As Ennis's wife is about to leave the supermarket with her children, their youngest daughter knocks over cans from a shelf. The manager says he will clean it up. And in the next shot, the cans are intact, as if nothing happened.
  • Sienna Miller could have played Larin.
  • The film is based on Annie Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain," which was first published on October 13, 1997, in the periodical “The New Yorker.”
  • When the foreman appears in the pasture with bad news about Uncle Jack, Jack is chopping wood and places a log on a stump at that moment. As the foreman is leaving, we see that the log is gone.
  • During the filming of one scene, Heath Ledger had to jump into a lake naked. The director later decided to remove all "nudity" shots from the final version of the film. However, ubiquitous paparazzi managed to obtain several photographs of Heath from the set. Soon these scandalous pictures appeared on the internet and in the "yellow press."
  • Joel Schumacher and Gus Van Sant were considered as candidates for the director's chair.

  • In an interview, Gyllenhaal said that during the filming of the kiss, they kissed so passionately that he thought Heath Ledger would break his nose.
  • Alma Jr. (Ennis's daughter) has blue eyes at a very young age. Several years later, the grown-up girl has brown eyes.
  • Matt Damon was offered one of the leading roles in the film, but he declined, believing that participation in this project could damage his career.
