Short description

A medical courier named Bryan is tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. His routine assignment turns into a struggle for survival during a single night as he becomes trapped in the center of a sudden viral outbreak. To escape the surrounding chaos, he must fight through crowds of mutated creatures.

This action-horror film is based on a Capcom video game series and was directed by Zach Cregger, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. In Cregger's directing career, this project follows Miss March, Barbarian, and Weapons. The movie stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Zach Cherry, Johnno Wilson, and Shaun W. Loeser. A joint production between the United States, Germany, and France, the film was produced by Columbia Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Davis Films, and Constantin Film.

With a budget of 65 million USD, the film earned 114 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has been well received by viewers, holding a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDb based on 33,347 votes and a 7.3/10 on TMDB from 347 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in Prague from October 2025 to January 2026.
  • Resident Evil is the highest-rated video game adaptation on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
  • After test screenings Zach Cregger cut almost all the jokes from the film: audiences found it “too funny”.
  • Cregger had never seen any of the earlier Resident Evil films and drew only on the games Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4.
  • The film runs parallel to Resident Evil 2, on the same night in Raccoon City, but is set in the present day.
  • None of the game characters appear in the film: as Cregger put it, Leon’s story is already told in the games.
  • The enforcer Maxine was written as a man; the role went to former world boxing champion Kali Reis.
  • The voice on the intercom belongs to Zach Cregger himself.
  • Four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., bid for the distribution rights; Sony won.
