ABBA: The Movie follows a country-and-western radio DJ named Ashley Wallace, played by Robert Hughes, who is sent by his station to secure an in-depth interview with ABBA. His assignment takes him across Australia during the group's 1977 tour, and he struggles to get anywhere near the band, losing his press pass and running afoul of a bodyguard, played by Tom Oliver. Around this fictional thread, the film presents concert footage of Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson performing on stage, capturing the scale of the group's Australian tour.
Lasse Hallström directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Robert Caswell. This was Hallström's first feature film as director, and his next came with My Life as a Dog in 1985. Stig Anderson and Reg Grundy produced the film, a co-production between Australia and Sweden.
The film mixes documentary and fiction, running 95 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 94 votes, indicating a modest but steady level of interest from viewers.
