Autumn Sonata

Charlotte Andergast is a celebrated concert pianist who has devoted her life to her career rather than to her family. After seven years apart, she accepts an invitation from her daughter Eva, who lives with her husband, a Protestant pastor, and asks her mother to visit. The reunion begins warmly, but the old discord soon returns, and Charlotte discovers that Eva is caring for her other daughter, Helena, who is seriously ill and had been placed in an institution. Over a long night, mother and daughter confront the grievances and resentments that have shaped their relationship.

Ingmar Bergman directed and wrote the film, the twenty-first of the twenty-four features he directed, following The Magic Flute and preceding Fanny and Alexander. Ingrid Bergman plays Charlotte and Liv Ullmann plays Eva, with Lena Nyman as Helena and Halvar Björk as Viktor. The production was mounted by companies in Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom, with Lew Grade as producer.

Released in 1978, the drama runs 93 minutes. On IMDb it holds 8.1 from around 42,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 8 from 731 votes, a smaller but similarly favorable response. A critics' rating of 8.8 from 33 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
