Candleshoe

Candleshoe is a 1977 family film from Walt Disney Productions, set largely at an English country estate of the same name. An American orphan named Casey, living by petty theft in Los Angeles, is recruited by a small-time crook, Harry Bundage, who believes a treasure is hidden somewhere on the property. He passes her off as the long-lost granddaughter of the estate's owner, Lady St. Edmund, to get inside and search for it. Once there, Casey meets the other children Lady St. Edmund has taken in and the butler Priory, who hides the household's strained finances from his employer. As she settles into life at the manor, her loyalties shift away from Bundage's scheme.

Norman Tokar directed, working from a screenplay by David Swift and Rosemary Anne Sisson, with Ron Miller producing. The film was Tokar's seventh in a run of Disney features that began with Sammy, the Way-Out Seal in 1962 and continued through The Apple Dumpling Gang and, a year after Candleshoe, The Cat from Outer Space. Jodie Foster plays Casey, with Leo McKern as Bundage, David Niven as Priory and Helen Hayes as Lady St. Edmund; Veronica Quilligan and Ian Sharrock appear among the twenty credited cast members.

Released in December 1977 and running just over an hour and a half, the film holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from around 5,400 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB from a much smaller base of about 120 users. Both point to a modest but enduring following rather than broad acclaim.
