Short description

After being dumped by her live-in boyfriend, an unemployed dancer and her 10-year-old daughter are reluctantly forced to live with a struggling off-Broadway actor.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming had already begun for the movie under the working title 'Bogart Have You Lived Here', written by Neil Simon (1927-2018), but Warner Bros. was still uneasy. They agreed to continue filming only on the condition that expenses be shared with MGM. This was one of the first joint projects between two of Hollywood's largest film companies, whereas today it is a common practice.
  • Initially, the film was intended to be titled 'Bogart Have You Lived Here', with Robert De Niro in the lead role and Mike Nichols (1931-2014) as director. It is believed that the plot was based on the life story of a young Dustin Hoffman, and on the stories he told later after becoming a famous actor. Hoffman wanted the lead role himself, but was denied. Over time, De Niro and Nichols left the project due to creative differences. Other candidates for the lead role included Jack Nicholson, James Caan (1940-2022), and Tony LoBianco. At one point, Richard Dreyfuss was brought on set as Marsha Mason's partner. Eventually, they were cast in the lead roles, although work on the film did not resume immediately. During this interval, Neil Simon significantly revised the script, and Herbert Ross (1927-2001) became the director.
