- Marion Cotillard effectively landed the role in this film after meeting with the director during lunch at a French restaurant, where James Gray and the actress's boyfriend, Guillaume Canet, were discussing the script for 'The Immigrant' (2013). James Gray and Marion Cotillard began to argue, and the actress even threw bread at his head. According to Gray, he hadn't seen any films with Cotillard before that meeting. He decided to study her work and ended up rewatching all the films he could get his hands on. After watching them, he realized he simply had to write a role for her.
