The Immigrant

Set in 1921, The Immigrant follows Ewa Cybulska and her sister Magda, who leave their native Poland for New York hoping for a fresh start. At Ellis Island, Magda is found to be ill and placed in quarantine, and the sisters are separated. Alone and disoriented in Manhattan, Ewa falls under the influence of Bruno Weiss, a charming man who takes her in but soon draws her into a life of burlesque and prostitution. Her situation shifts when she meets Bruno's cousin Orlando, a stage magician, who offers her affection and a possible way out. The conflict turns on Ewa's devotion to her detained sister, Bruno's possessiveness, and the precarious position of a woman with no money and no legal footing.

James Gray directed and co-wrote the film with Ric Menello, and it sits between Two Lovers (2008) and The Lost City of Z (2017) in the run of nine features he has directed. Marion Cotillard plays Ewa, with Joaquin Phoenix as Bruno and Jeremy Renner as Orlando; Dagmara Domińczyk, Yelena Solovey and Jicky Schnee appear in supporting roles.

The film was made for about 16 million USD and took roughly 6 million USD at the worldwide box office, a modest return relative to its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 896 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 7.5 out of 10 from 114 reviews, so critics rated it considerably higher than the general audience did.
