Every Which Way but Loose

Philo Beddoe is a truck-driving, beer-loving everyman who earns extra money as an unbeaten bare-knuckle fighter in barroom bouts arranged by his friend Orville. He shares his life with Clyde, an orangutan he won in a bet and who is very much part of the household. Philo falls for Lynn Halsey-Taylor, a country singer who avoids anything resembling a steady commitment; when she leaves without warning, he sets off after her with Orville and Clyde. Their pursuit across the American Southwest puts a motorcycle gang, a pair of crooked policemen and the celebrated brawler Tank Murdock in their path, while a produce seller named Echo joins the travellers along the way.

Every Which Way but Loose was directed by James Fargo, the second of the three films listed for him, after The Enforcer and before Forced Vengeance, and written by Jeremy Joe Kronsberg. Clint Eastwood stars as Philo, with Sondra Locke as Lynn, Geoffrey Lewis as Orville, the orangutan Manis as Clyde, Beverly D'Angelo as Echo and Walter Barnes as Tank Murdock. It was produced by Robert Daley for Warner Bros. and Malpaso Productions on a budget of about 5 million dollars, and it took roughly 85 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 32,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from a little over 500. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 27 reviews places it below both audience scores.
