What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place in the state of Oregon in the cities of Oakland, Roseburg, and Sutherlin.
  • The real Travis and Dana Walton appeared in the film in cameo roles in a scene where locals discuss the disappearance of Walton.
  • The film depicts the abduction of Walton by aliens quite differently from how Walton himself claimed it happened in reality. According to screenwriter Tracy Tormé, the producers found Walton's story tedious and ordered some changes to be made to it.
  • According to director Robert Lieberman, he did not want to cast D.B. Sweeney in the film. There were only a few days left before the start of filming, and no one had yet been approved for the role of Walton. Sherry Lansing of Paramount Pictures told Lieberman that either he cast Sweeney or the filming would be canceled.
