Fire in the Sky

Fire in the Sky dramatizes the case of Travis Walton, a logger in northeastern Arizona who vanished in November 1975 while working with a crew clearing brush for the government. His co-workers told the sheriff that a strange light in the forest had taken him, but with no motive and no evidence of a crime, authorities suspected the men of murder instead, and searches of the area turned up nothing. Days later Walton reappeared, disoriented and barely able to account for where he had been. Under hypnosis he described being taken aboard a craft, where he encountered other beings and was subjected to medical examinations. The film, based on Walton's account of the incident, stars D.B. Sweeney as Walton and Robert Patrick as crew foreman Mike Rodgers, with Craig Sheffer, Peter Berg, Henry Thomas and Bradley Gregg among the loggers, and a supporting investigator who doubts the abduction story.

The screenplay is by Tracy Tormé, and the film was directed by Rob Lieberman; it was the first of three features he would direct, ahead of D3: The Mighty Ducks and Red Skies. Produced by Joe Wizan and Todd Black and released in March 1993, it cost about 15 million dollars and took roughly 20 million at the box office worldwide.

Its ratings sit in the middle range. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from about 31,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7/10 from a much smaller sample, while the critics' score of 5.4/10 from 31 reviews is lower than both, suggesting audiences have been more receptive to it than reviewers.
