Sans Soleil

Sans Soleil is a 1983 French documentary directed and written by Chris Marker. It arrives between his earlier films La Jetée and Three Cheers for the Whale, and the later A. K., and it is produced by Anatole Dauman for Argos Films.

The film is built around letters attributed to a fictional cameraman, Sandor Krasna, which are read aloud by a woman. His reflections on time, memory and the act of recording images move between locations including Japan, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, France and the United States. The material blends documentary footage with fictional elements, taking in daily life and public gatherings, and it returns repeatedly to Japan and West Africa as the two poles that hold the traveller's attention. Archive footage of Amílcar Cabral also appears. The voices include Florence Delay as the narrator for the French version, with Riyoko Ikeda, Charlotte Kerr and Arielle Domblase among the other participants.
