Red Velvet is a Mexican blend of comedy, horror, and romance centered on the Vesta Awards, a surreal event honoring the most devastating romantic tragedies. A caustic host presents four different segments exploring the grim aspects of affection, including unrequited loyalty, uncontrolled obsession, an unusual emotional contagion, and a masquerade ball attended by death. As the program progresses, the boundary between the staged award show and the stories it showcases fades, suggesting that romantic experiences are a form of performance with inevitable conclusions.
The film was directed and produced by Carlos Argudín and Amanda Reyes through The Vesta Dream Pictures. It features a cast of 25 credited performers, including María José Alfaro in the role of the host. Other key roles are played by Luis Eduardo Castillo, Marco Sainz, Fernanda Rubí, and Daniel Maltos. With a runtime of 36 minutes, the production explores the intersection of love and tragedy through its fragmented structure.
