The Burrowers

In the Dakota Territories of 1879, a family of settlers disappears from their home, leaving a group of men from the surrounding area to search for them and whoever took them. They set out expecting to face a band of hostile Native Americans, and some join a military detachment whose commander pursues brutal methods of his own. Along the way they begin to suspect that the danger they are chasing does not come from the people they assumed, and that something is following them from beneath the ground.

This horror Western was directed by J.T. Petty, the second of the three films he directed, between Mimic: Sentinel in 2003 and Hellbenders in 2013. The cast includes Karl Geary as Coffey, the man whose intended bride is among the missing, along with Doug Hutchison, Clancy Brown, William Mapother, Jocelin Donahue and Laura Leighton. It was produced by Jason Shuman and William Sherak for Blue Star Pictures on a budget of about 7 million dollars, and runs 96 minutes.
