The Bridge at Remagen

Set in March 1945, as the war in Europe nears its end, the film centres on the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, the last span over the Rhine still standing. German forces intend to destroy it; American troops advancing into Germany want to seize it intact, since it offers a route into enemy territory and a way out for soldiers and civilians trapped on the western bank. The fighting that follows pits the two sides against each other over the bridge, with an American lieutenant and his platoon sent into the thick of the action.

John Guillermin directed the film, which sits between I Was Monty's Double (1958) and Shaft in Africa (1973) in a career that later included The Towering Inferno and King Kong. William Roberts and Richard Yates wrote the screenplay, and David L. Wolper produced. George Segal plays Lt. Phil Hartman, with Robert Vaughn as Maj. Paul Krueger, Ben Gazzara as Sgt. Angelo, Bradford Dillman as Maj. Barnes, E.G. Marshall as Brig. Gen. Shinner and Peter van Eyck as Gen. Von Brock among a credited cast of 28.

The film runs 117 minutes and was released in June 1969. Audience response places it in solid rather than outstanding territory, with a rating of 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller base of about 194 votes.
