Short description

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 continues the story of the Sawyer family, the cannibal clan from the original film. A radio host named Stretch Brock takes a call from two young men who are joking around on air, and the line goes dead as Leatherface attacks their car. Stretch realizes she has captured the killings on tape. A former Texas lawman, Lefty Enright, who has spent years trying to avenge the murder of his relatives, contacts her in the hope of finally tracking the family down. Their search draws them toward the Sawyers' underground lair, where the chainsaws come out.

Tobe Hooper, who directed the 1974 original, returned for this sequel, the sixth of the fifteen films he directed in chronological order, between Lifeforce and Invaders from Mars. L.M. Kit Carson wrote the screenplay, and Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus produced for Cannon Group and Golan-Globus Productions. Caroline Williams plays Stretch, Dennis Hopper plays Lefty Enright, and Jim Siedow, Bill Moseley, Bill Johnson and Ken Evert appear as members of the Sawyer family. The film mixes horror with comedy and runs 100 minutes.

Made for about 5 million dollars, it took roughly 8 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from about 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from around 1,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 from 32 reviews places it close to the audience scores, which are moderate.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Bill Moseley filmed a short parody titled "Texas Chainsaw Manicure," in which he played a cameo role, and showed it to a screenwriter acquaintance, who in turn showed it to Tobe Hooper. Hooper liked the film and remembered Moseley. When it came time to cast "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," Bill Moseley was hired for one of the roles.
  • In 1986, Hoyts Distribution, which handled 90% of Cannon films in Australia, submitted the movie for classification. The film left such an unfavorable impression on the board that it was refused classification, which effectively meant the film was banned. Hoyts Distribution considered cutting and editing the film, but there were so many scenes the board disliked that they decided not to bother. The ban remained in place until two decades later, when MGM resubmitted the film to the board, and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" was finally released.
  • When Caroline Williams was called in to audition, she took a running start in the lobby and burst into the audition room at full speed, pulled Tobe Hooper and producer L.M. Kit Carson out of their chairs, used those same chairs to barricade the door, and only then began performing the scene.
  • Tobe Hooper, director of the first 1974 film in the franchise, and Kim Henkel (who co-wrote the first film) initially considered a sequel featuring an entire town of cannibals, which would be a caricature of the 1980 horror film "Motel Hell" (Kevin Connor). Connor's film, in turn, was a caricature of the original "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." The sequel would have been titled "Beyond the Valley of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre," but studio executives insisted on significant script changes and even hired another screenwriter; the result of all these changes was Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" (1986).
