Short description
Speed centers on a Los Angeles police officer, Jack Traven, who has already crossed paths with a bomber named Howard Payne during an earlier extortion attempt. Payne returns with a new scheme: he hides a device on a city bus that arms itself once the vehicle reaches a certain speed and detonates if the bus slows down again. With the driver incapacitated, a passenger named Annie takes the wheel, and Jack must keep the bus moving through the city while searching for a way to get the passengers off safely.
The film is Jan de Bont's feature directing debut, arriving in 1994 before Twister, Speed 2: Cruise Control and later projects. Graham Yost wrote the screenplay, Mark Gordon produced, and the cast includes Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock, Joe Morton, Jeff Daniels and Alan Ruck.
Made for around 30 million dollars, Speed became a substantial commercial success, earning roughly 350 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.3/10 on IMDb from about 421,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from around 7,000 votes, while its critics' score stands higher at 8.4/10 from 78 reviews, indicating broad approval across critical and popular audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- Thirteen buses were used during filming, two of which were blown up.
- The speed shown on the bus's speedometer (digitized in miles/hour) often did not match the bus's actual speed.
- A miniature model was used for the scene where the subway train derails.
- Jan de Bont chose Keanu Reeves for the role of Jack Traven after seeing him in *Point Break* (1991).

- When Jack sits down to comfort Annie, the bus doors are seen to be closed, however, in the next shot, Jack is seen with the doors open.
- In one episode of the television show *MythBusters* (2003), which aired on the Discovery Channel on April 8, 2009, the team recreated the scene in which passengers moved to the right side of the bus to prevent it from tipping over during a turn. It was determined that there was actually no danger of tipping. Later, on December 9, 2009, the team unsuccessfully attempted to recreate the scene in which the bus jumped 15 meters.
- The role of Jack was offered to Steven Baldwin, William Baldwin, Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Jeff Bridges, and Tom Hanks, but they all turned it down.
- Renny Harlin and Quentin Tarantino both declined to direct the film.
- When the bus is circling in the airport, the middle doors are seen open, but when Jack approaches them to exit the vehicle, they are closed, and he pushes them to open.
- Halle Berry turned down the role of Annie without regret, even though the film became a huge hit. She said, "That movie wouldn’t have done for me what it did for Sandra Bullock. I just would have been a Black bus driver."
- During filming, Keanu Reeves accidentally broke the glass in a bus door, but the scene was ultimately kept in the film.
