Short description

Garfield Gets Real is a 2007 animated family adventure about the famous comic-strip cat growing tired of his life on the newspaper page and slipping out into the real world. At first he enjoys living as an ordinary house cat, but he soon discovers that real animals have a harder, less comfortable existence than their drawn counterparts. When he learns his strip will be cancelled if he is not back before it goes to print, he sets out to return, helped by old friends and some unusual new companions.

The film was directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, whose earlier credits include Spawn, Pixel Perfect, Halloweentown High and Frankenfish. It comes before Garfield's Fun Fest and Garfield's Pet Force in his filmography. Jim Davis, the creator of the comic strip, wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Frank Welker as Garfield, Gregg Berger as Odie, Jason Marsden as Nermal and Audrey Wasilewski as Arlene. It runs 77 minutes and was made for 10 million US dollars.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.3 out of 10 from around 3,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5 out of 10 from about 148 votes. Its worldwide box office of roughly 2 million US dollars was well below its production budget, reflecting a limited theatrical life for a film tied to a home-entertainment release.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film extensively features characters from two comic strips – “Blondie” and “Mother Goose and Grimm.”
