Short description
Hiccup has become chief of Berk and has built the peaceful coexistence between Vikings and dragons that he long dreamed of. Toothless, his Night Fury companion, meets a white female of his kind, and the bond between dragon and rider is strained as the two creatures grow closer. At the same time, a dragon hunter named Grimmel threatens the village and its inhabitants. With their home no longer safe, Hiccup and his people set out to find a hidden world that his late father Stoick believed in, hoping it may be a true refuge for dragons.
The film is the third chapter of DreamWorks Animation's trilogy, written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who also directed the two earlier instalments and had previously made Lilo & Stitch. Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera return as the voices of Hiccup and Astrid, alongside Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson, with F. Murray Abraham joining as Grimmel. It cost about 129 million dollars and took roughly 522 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.4 from around 178,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8 from a smaller number of users. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 272 reviews places professional assessments close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Early script drafts stipulated that Drago Bludvist would once again be the film's main antagonist, and would redeem himself by the finale.
- Justin Ruppel replaced T.J. Miller as the voice actor for Tuffnut Thorston because Miller found himself at the center of a series of scandals in mid-2018.
