Avalanche is a 1978 disaster film about a winter resort whose opening celebrations are interrupted by a catastrophic snowslide. David Shelby, a wealthy businessman, has built a hotel at the foot of a mountain, dismissing warnings from locals and from a photographer named Nick Thorne that clearing the trees has left the slopes dangerously exposed. When the avalanche hits, Shelby, his former wife Caroline Brace and the arriving guests are cut off from the outside world and must fight to stay alive.
The film was directed by Corey Allen, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Claude Pola. It was the first of three features he directed, followed by The Return of Frank Cannon and I-Man. Roger Corman produced for New World Pictures, and the cast is led by Rock Hudson as Shelby, Mia Farrow as Caroline, and Robert Forster as Thorne, with Jeanette Nolan, Rick Moses and Steve Franken in supporting roles.
Made on a budget of about seven million dollars, the film was released in the United States on September 29, 1978, and runs 94 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 77 votes, which suggests a largely negative response from viewers.
