In 18th-century Romania, Rayne is a dhampir, born of a violent union between a human woman and Kagan, the vampire king. Raised in a traveling circus, she discovers her true nature and refuses to feed on innocents, choosing instead to hunt vampires. After vampire hunters Sebastian and Vladimir encounter her, she joins their secret society, Brimstone, and sets out to destroy Kagan, a task made harder by his pursuit of legendary relics. The film adapts the video game of the same name.
Uwe Boll directed from a screenplay by Guinevere Turner; Dan Clarke and Shawn Williamson produced alongside Boll. It is the fourth of twenty films Boll directed in chronological order, arriving between Alone in the Dark and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. Kristanna Loken plays Rayne, with Ben Kingsley as Kagan, Michelle Rodriguez as Katarin, Michael Madsen as Vladimir and Matthew Davis as Sebastian. Forty-nine cast members and 105 crew are credited.
Made for 25 million USD, the film returned about 4 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 2.9/10 from 52 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 4.1/10 from 642 votes, so audiences rated it somewhat more generously than critics did.
