Set in the summer of 1905, this drama follows the Russian upper class as they spend their holiday in the countryside enjoying luxury and romantic affairs. While the group remains focused on their leisure, a character named Varvara feels that their peaceful existence is temporary. The story examines themes of privilege and class denial as the characters attempt to ignore an approaching social and political crisis.
The film was produced by the National Theatre in the United Kingdom. It was directed by Robert Hastie, who also directed National Theatre Live: Hamlet and Summerfolk earlier in 2026. This production is a new adaptation of a work by Maxim Gorky, written by Nina Raine and Moses Raine. The cast includes Rebecca Banatvala, Tomas Barrett, Tamika Bennett, Pip Carter, Peter Forbes, and Brandon Grace, with a total of 23 credited performers. The movie has a runtime of 149 minutes.
