A reporter named Joseph Frady looks into the death of a United States senator, an event he witnessed along with several other journalists. The official finding is that a lone, disturbed gunman acted alone, but as witnesses to the killing begin dying in what are recorded as accidents, Frady grows convinced that the truth is being covered up. When a fellow journalist who shared his suspicions dies as well, he sets out to trace the people behind the deaths and finds a wider operation reaching far beyond one murder.
The film was directed by Alan J. Pakula, who also produced it, from a screenplay by David Giler and Lorenzo Semple Jr. It followed Pakula's Klute and preceded All the President's Men and later films including Sophie's Choice and Presumed Innocent. Warren Beatty plays Frady, with Paula Prentiss as Lee Carter, William Daniels as Austin Tucker, Walter McGinn as Jack Younger and Hume Cronyn as Bill Rintels. The production cost about 3 million dollars and took in roughly the same amount worldwide.
Critical response was notably stronger than general audience response: critics gave it 8.1 out of 10 across 46 reviews, while on IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from 388 votes, figures that suggest a well-regarded film with a smaller, mostly favourable audience following.
