What's left behind the scenes

  • Gilley's Bar, where the main action of the film takes place, actually exists and is still in operation (although in a different location). It was opened in 1971 by country singer Mickey Gilley along with Sherwood Cryer in Pasadena, Texas, and is the largest honky-tonk bar in the world.
  • The film's screenplay was adapted by Aaron Latham and James Bridges from Latham's article "The Ballad of the American Urban Cowboy in Search of True Grit" about the nightlife of patrons at Gilley’s for the September 1978 issue of Esquire magazine.
  • Some film critics dubbed the film a country version of "Saturday Night Fever".
