Urban Cowboy
Short description
Bud Davis, a young man from rural Texas, moves to the Houston area and takes a job in the petrochemical industry. In the evenings he joins the crowds at Gilley's, a vast country-and-western club whose main attraction is a mechanical bull. There he meets Sissy, a cowgirl who expects to be treated as an equal, and the two marry after a quick courtship. Their marriage runs into trouble because of Bud's traditional ideas about the roles of men and women, and jealousy of a rival drives them apart. Bud sets out to win Sissy back, with the bull-riding competition at the club as his arena.
James Bridges directed and co-wrote the film with Aaron Latham; it followed his 1979 film The China Syndrome and came before Perfect (1985) and Bright Lights, Big City (1988). John Travolta plays Bud and Debra Winger plays Sissy, with Scott Glenn, Madolyn Smith Osborne, Barry Corbin and Brooke Alderson in supporting roles. Robert Evans and Irving Azoff produced.
Released by Paramount on June 6, 1980 and running 132 minutes, the film cost about 10 million dollars and took roughly 53 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from about 278 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 24 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Some film critics have dubbed the film a country version of "Saturday Night Fever".
- The real-life Bar Gilley’s, where the main action of the film takes place, still exists and operates today (although in a different location). It was opened in 1971 by country singer Mickey Gilley and Sherwood Cryer in Pasadena, Texas, and is the largest honky-tonk bar in the world.
- The film's screenplay was adapted by Aaron Latham and James Bridges from Latham's article "The Ballad of the American Urban Cowboy in Search of True Grit" about the nightlife of patrons at Gilley’s for the September 1978 issue of Esquire magazine.
