4 for Texas

In 1960s Texas, two competing businessmen, Zack Thomas and Joe Jarrett, find themselves on the same stagecoach when outlaws attack. They join forces to keep a large sum of money out of the bandits' hands, but once they reach Galveston their rivalry resumes, with each man pursuing his own interests and his own romantic entanglement. The outlaw Matson remains at large, and a dishonest banker proves just as dangerous to both men, pushing them toward an uneasy partnership.

Robert Aldrich directed and produced this comedy western, his eighth film as director, following Sodom and Gomorrah and preceding Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte. He wrote the screenplay with W.R. Burnett and Teddi Sherman. Frank Sinatra plays Zack and Dean Martin plays Joe, with Anita Ekberg and Ursula Andress as the women in their lives and Charles Bronson as Matson. The production, from Warner Bros. Pictures and The Sam Company, cost about 5 million dollars and runs 124 minutes.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb the film holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 3,900 votes, and on TMDB it scores 5.1 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 62 votes. Both figures point to a lightly regarded entry in the careers of its stars and its director.
