What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on David Mamet's 1974 play, "Sexual Perversity in Chicago." The film was originally supposed to be titled the same, but many major newspapers and television channels categorically refused to advertise the film with such a title.
  • Phoebe Cates auditioned for the role of Debbie, which was eventually played by Demi Moore.
  • Initially, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were supposed to star in the film. However, John Belushi asked his brother James Belushi for advice, who had previously played a similar role in David Mamet's play. James objected to his participation in the project, explaining that he didn't want the brothers to be compared to each other.
  • According to Rob Lowe, he began reading the script sent to him while lying in the bath, intending to quickly skim a couple of pages, but only realized what had happened on page 73, when the water had long gone cold and he knew he would definitely be in the film.
  • According to Rob Lowe, he improvised in the scene where his character breaks up with Demi Moore's character. In particular, Lowe said, "I don't love you anymore," and this phrase caught his partner off guard (they had previously maintained a very close relationship), so the sound of surprise that Moore made was very natural.
