Head

Head is a surreal comedy built around the Monkees, the American band assembled for television. The four members play versions of themselves, drifting through a loose series of musical numbers and sketches rather than following a conventional plot. Their encounters touch on romance, the business of making music and films, and the wider social conflicts of the late 1960s, with the group's trademark humor turned toward anti-establishment commentary.

The film was directed by Bob Rafelson, who also wrote it with Jack Nicholson and band member Davy Jones; Rafelson and Nicholson produced as well. It was Rafelson's first feature as director, arriving before Five Easy Pieces, Stay Hungry and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith star as themselves, with Annette Funicello and Timothy Carey among a credited cast of 57.

Released in November 1968 by Columbia Pictures with Raybert Productions and BBS Productions, Head runs 86 minutes. Its reputation has settled into modest territory: on IMDb it holds 6.4 from around 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.2 from roughly 107 votes. Those figures describe a small, mixed but persistent following rather than broad contemporary success.
