Short description
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang follows Caractacus Potts, an eccentric and struggling inventor whose fortunes change when he builds a car that can drive, fly and float. Along with his two children and the wealthy Truly Scrumptious, he travels in the vehicle to a distant land of castles, pirates and strange adventures. There the family runs up against Baron Bomburst, the ruler of Vulgaria, who wants the remarkable car for himself.
Ken Hughes directed the film, his fourth feature in the chronological list of his work, between Casino Royale and Cromwell, and wrote the screenplay with Roald Dahl. Albert R. Broccoli produced. Dick Van Dyke plays Potts, with Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious, Lionel Jeffries as Grandpa Potts, Gert Fröbe and Anna Quayle as the Baron and Baroness, and Benny Hill as the Toymaker. The large credited cast runs to 73 names.
The British production had a budget of 10 million dollars and returned 8 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from 55,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from 769 votes. A film critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 30 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience scores. The film runs 144 minutes and mixes adventure, comedy, family, fantasy and music.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the time of filming, Dick Van Dyke was 40 years old and never warmed up before dance numbers. During filming, he thought he had pulled a muscle, but soon after he was already moving around, albeit with a limp. The actor saw a doctor, who stated that he had arthritis and that in 5 years the actor would either be walking with a cane or end up in a wheelchair. In response, Van Dyke danced right in the doctor's office, much to the doctor's surprise. Almost half a century later, when Van Dyke was already 92 years old, he danced in Rob Marshall's musical "Mary Poppins Returns" (2018).
- Initially, Dick Van Dyke refused to participate in this film, but he was offered the role again and again, and the fee was increased more and more. When the fee reached a seven-figure sum plus a certain percentage of the profits, he agreed.
- Seven magical cars were created: a used one, a restored one, one for flying, one for filming on water, and three more for other scenes.
