Brigadoon

Two American visitors, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, are on a hunting trip in the Scottish Highlands when they come across an unfamiliar village. The locals tell them Brigadoon exists for only a single day every hundred years, a state of affairs meant to shield it from the outside world, and its people sleep through the intervening century. Tommy is drawn to Fiona Campbell, a young woman from the village, while his friend is eager to leave. Their stay lasts only until the day ends, and Tommy must decide whether to return to his life in New York or remain where he has found something he did not expect.

The film is a musical fantasy from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Vincente Minnelli and adapted for the screen by Alan Jay Lerner from the Broadway musical he wrote with Frederick Loewe. Arthur Freed produced, and Gene Kelly plays Tommy opposite Van Johnson as Jeff, with Cyd Charisse as Fiona; Elaine Stewart, Barry Jones and Hugh Laing appear among a credited cast of twenty-one. It was Minnelli's ninth film as director, arriving after The Band Wagon and before Lust for Life.

Made for about two million dollars, it took a similar amount at the worldwide box office, so it did not recoup much beyond its cost during its initial run. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly ten thousand votes, on TMDB 6.5 from far fewer, and critics gave it 6.2 from fifteen reviews, meaning audiences have registered slightly warmer feelings toward it than reviewers did.
