- Juliette Lewis had just left rehab when Garry Marshall (1934-2016) cast her in the lead role. The insurance company refused to insure the actress, so Marshall personally found the money for her insurance.
- Marshall initially considered casting his own daughter, Kathleen, for the role of the sister, but after seeing Sarah Paulson at auditions, he gave her the part.
