Carla Tate, a young woman with a mild intellectual disability, returns home after years at a special school and decides she wants to live on her own terms. She moves into her own apartment, enrolls in college and falls for Daniel, a young man who faces similar challenges. Her wealthy mother, Elizabeth, has spent years protecting her and struggles to accept that her daughter can manage adult life, including a romance. The conflict between mother and daughter over independence shapes the story.
Garry Marshall directed and co-wrote the film with Bob Brunner, and it was produced by Mario Iscovich, Ellen H. Schwartz and Alexandra Rose. It is the eleventh of the eighteen films Marshall directed, arriving between Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries. Juliette Lewis plays Carla, with Diane Keaton as Elizabeth, Tom Skerritt as Radley Tate, Giovanni Ribisi as Daniel McMann, and Poppy Montgomery and Sarah Paulson as Carla's sisters. The production, from Touchstone Pictures, had a budget of 35 million US dollars, and the credited cast runs to 92 names with 55 credited crew members.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 49 reviews, while on TMDB it scores 6.4 out of 10 from 182 votes, a gap suggesting audiences responded more warmly than reviewers. The 130-minute running time places it among Marshall's longer comedies.
