Capone

Capone is a 1975 crime drama about the rise of Al Capone, from his early days in New York to his years as the leading figure of organized crime in Chicago. Johnny Torrio, already an established boss, brings the younger man into his operation and teaches him how to move among politicians, judges and lawyers, and how to present himself in respectable company. Capone proves an apt pupil, becoming Torrio's trusted lieutenant as bootleg rivalries turn increasingly violent and pressure mounts on Torrio to share his territory. Rather than accept the arrangement, Capone decides to take over the organization himself, consolidating his position by removing opponents and manipulating elections.

The film was directed by Steve Carver, the second of the six features listed in his filmography, following The Arena and preceding Drum. Howard Browne wrote the screenplay, and Roger Corman produced. Ben Gazzara plays Capone, with Harry Guardino as Torrio, Susan Blakely as Iris Crawford, John Cassavetes as Frankie Yale, Sylvester Stallone as Frank Nitti and Frank Campanella as Big Jim Colosimo, among a credited cast of fifty. It runs 101 minutes and took about 2 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from roughly 3,500 votes, and on TMDB 5.9/10 from around 110 votes, placing both audience scores in similar middle territory while the vote totals differ sharply.
