Ted is a Hong Kong police officer whose ambition is to leave the force, marry his girlfriend and spend his life at sea. Those plans are held back by his responsibility for his brother Danny, a mentally impaired man who cannot look after himself. Danny becomes caught up with a gang of jewel thieves, and Ted's efforts to clear his name put him at odds with the criminals and with his own colleagues.
Sammo Hung directed and plays Danny, with Jackie Chan as Ted. The two had already worked together many times, and this was the eighth of Hung's sixteen directing credits, arriving between My Lucky Stars and Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars in 1985. Barry Wong wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Emily Chu Bo-Yee, Mang Hoi, Melvin Wong King-Sun and Lam Ching-Ying. The film mixes action with a family drama about a man torn between duty to his brother and his own future.
Released in Hong Kong in September 1985, Heart of Dragon runs 91 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from roughly 5,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7 out of 10 from around 207 votes, a small sample that is markedly more favourable than the larger IMDb group.
