Darby O'Gill and the Little People

In a small Irish town, an aging caretaker named Darby O'Gill spends his days telling anyone who will listen about the leprechauns living in the nearby hill, and about their ruler, King Brian. When a younger man from Dublin arrives to take over his job, Darby keeps the change hidden from his daughter Katie. His dealings with the leprechauns lead him to King Brian, who grants him three wishes, though the king proves a tricky partner in any bargain. The story moves between the everyday life of the town and the underground world of the little people.

The film was directed by Robert Stevenson, the fifth of the fourteen features he directed in chronological order, following Old Yeller and followed by Kidnapped. Lawrence Edward Watkin wrote the screenplay, and Walt Disney and Bill Anderson produced. Albert Sharpe plays Darby, with Janet Munro as Katie, Sean Connery as Michael MacBride, Jimmy O'Dea as King Brian, Kieron Moore as Pony Sugrue and Estelle Winwood as Sheelah Sugrue.
