The Parent Trap
Short description
Released in 1961, The Parent Trap follows identical twin girls who were separated as infants after their parents divorced and who have grown up unaware of each other, one with her mother and the other with her father. They meet by chance at a summer camp, initially as rivals, and eventually discover that they are sisters. The two then scheme to reunite their parents, beginning by switching places so each can live with the other parent, and setting out to drive off a woman who intends to marry their father.
David Swift directed and wrote the screenplay, his second feature after Pollyanna, with Walt Disney among the producers and a credited cast of twenty-four. Hayley Mills plays both twins, appearing opposite Maureen O'Hara, Brian Keith, Charles Ruggles, Cathleen Nesbitt and Una Merkel. The film pairs its family comedy with a romantic thread, and it runs 129 minutes. Made by Walt Disney Productions, it took in about 25 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for its era.
On IMDb it holds a 7.2 rating from roughly 26,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7 out of 10 from 445 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from nineteen reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting general agreement about the film's merits rather than a sharp divide.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of one scene, Brian Keith (1921-1997) broke a rib, but finished the scene.
- Susan Henning was a stunt double for Hayley Mills, but her name was not included in the credits due to contractual obligations. At a wrap party, Walt Disney gave her a small Donald Duck figurine for "best performance remaining off-screen".
- In one scene, girls follow the main characters, whistling a march that soldiers whistled under similar circumstances in David Lean's (1908-1991) film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957).
- David Swift wanted to remove the scenes of the cake falling on the face of Ruth McDevitt's character from the film, but the producers convinced him not to, stating that it would be one of the funniest scenes in the film. They were right.
