Second in Command is a 2006 action thriller set in a small Eastern European country in the grip of a political crisis. Armed rebels stage a coup attempt, and the country's president takes refuge inside the American embassy, which the insurgents then besiege. When the U.S. ambassador is killed, Commanding Officer Sam Keenan, a former Navy SEAL newly posted to the country, finds himself in charge of the embassy's defence. With only a small detachment of marines and no reinforcements close enough to arrive in time, he must organize the resistance against a far larger force of rebels.
Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as Keenan, heading a cast that includes Julie Cox, Alan McKenna, Razaaq Adoti, Velibor Topic and William Tapley, with thirty-six credited performers in all. Simon Fellows directed the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Bowers, David L. Corley and Jayson Rothwell, and it was produced by Pierre Spengler, Donald Kushner and Brad Krevoy on a budget of twenty-two million dollars.
Second in Command was released in May 2006. It sits between two other films Fellows directed, 7 Seconds (2005) and Until Death (2007). On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.9 from around 7,300 votes, and on TMDB it has a 5.5 from about 185 votes.
