In Edwardian London, the Banks household is struggling. The family's stern banker father and his suffragette wife cannot find a nanny who will stay, and their two children, Jane and Michael, have driven away every candidate. Then Mary Poppins arrives, carried down from the sky by her umbrella, and takes charge of the children. With music and unusual outings, she brings wonder into their days and gradually changes how the family treats one another.
The film was directed by Robert Stevenson, the ninth of the fourteen features he directed, coming between Son of Flubber and That Darn Cat! Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi wrote the screenplay, and Walsh produced with Walt Disney for Walt Disney Productions. Julie Andrews plays Mary Poppins, with Dick Van Dyke as Bert, David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns as the parents, and Karen Dotrice and Hermione Baddeley among a credited cast of 63.
Released in December 1964, the film cost about 5 million dollars and took roughly 103 million dollars worldwide, a large return for its time. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from around 198,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from over 5,000. A critics' rating of 8.5 from 59 reviews sits above both audience scores.
