A famous writer named Onoff has lived as a recluse for years without publishing anything. One stormy night he is picked up by police without identification, out of breath and unable to account for the recent past. At an isolated rural station, an inspector who regards him with suspicion questions him at length, trying to connect the writer's presence to a killing that has occurred. The interrogation becomes a contest of memory and truth as the inspector presses the man on what he can recall.
Giuseppe Tornatore directed and wrote the film, which followed his earlier features The Professor and Cinema Paradiso and preceded The Legend of 1900, Malena and later works. Gérard Depardieu plays Onoff, and Roman Polanski appears opposite him as the Inspector; Sergio Rubini, Nicola Di Pinto, Tano Cimarosa and Paolo Lombardi round out the cast. The Italian-French production runs 111 minutes and mixes crime, drama, mystery and thriller elements.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.4 from 405 votes, indicating a modest but appreciative audience for this confined, dialogue-driven two-hander.
