Cécile is a seventeen-year-old living in Paris with her wealthy widowed father, Raymond, a man devoted to pleasure and casual romances. Their summer on the French Riviera, at a villa shared with Raymond's young companion Elsa, is upended by the arrival of Anne Larson, an elegant and cultured woman who was a friend of Cécile's late mother. When Raymond announces that he intends to marry Anne, Cécile sees her carefree existence slipping away. Unwilling to accept the restrictions Anne represents, she sets out to separate the couple, a scheme with consequences she does not foresee.
Otto Preminger directed and produced this adaptation of Françoise Sagan's novel, working from a screenplay by Arthur Laurents. It was the ninth of the sixteen films Preminger directed, following Saint Joan and preceding Anatomy of a Murder. Deborah Kerr plays Anne, David Niven plays Raymond, and Jean Seberg, who had starred in Saint Joan for Preminger, plays Cécile; Mylène Demongeot, Geoffrey Horne and Juliette Gréco appear in supporting roles.
Made by Columbia Pictures with Wheel Productions, the film took about thirteen million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from roughly 6,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from about 150 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from twenty-four reviews places it somewhat above both audience scores.
