The Hit
Short description
Ten years after betraying his fellow criminals in exchange for immunity, Willie Parker has settled into a quiet life in Spain under a new identity. His past catches up with him when his former associates track him down and hire two professional killers, Braddock and Myron, to abduct him and drive him to Paris, where he is to be executed. The kidnapping goes according to plan at first, but the long journey across the country turns into a series of mishaps, and the men transporting Parker find the situation increasingly difficult to manage, especially once the police begin searching for the missing man.
The Hit is a British crime film directed by Stephen Frears, the second of the twenty-three features he has directed in chronological order, following Gumshoe and preceding My Beautiful Laundrette. Peter Prince wrote the screenplay, and Jeremy Thomas and Joyce Herlihy produced. John Hurt plays Braddock, Terence Stamp plays Willie Parker, and Tim Roth plays Myron, with Laura del Sol, Bill Hunter and Fernando Rey also appearing among the twenty-seven credited cast members.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 242 votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from nineteen reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Joe Strummer, the frontman of The Clash, was considered for one of the roles. However, the other band members opposed this, so Strummer suggested Tim Roth for the part, whom he knew from the role of Trevor in Alan Clarke's crime drama "Made in Britain" (1983).
- Prior to the filming of this movie, which took place in Spain, Tim Roth had never traveled outside the United Kingdom. At the time, he did not have a driver's license and, consequently, no driving experience. This is why he lost control of the vehicle during the filming of the corresponding car scene.
- Terence Stamp was cast in the role of the professional hitman Willie Parker, although producer Jeremy Thomas would have preferred to see John Hurt in the role.
- In one of the scenes, the reflection of the film crew can be seen in the sunglasses of the characters played by John Hurt and Tim Roth.
