Short description
Directed by Junya Sato and based on a book by Jun Henmi, "Yamato" has a framing story set in the present day and uses flashbacks to tell the story of the crew of the World War II Japanese battleship Yamato. The film was never released in the United States, where reviewers who have seen it have compared the military epic to "Titanic" and "Saving Private Ryan."

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming of "Yamato" took place from March to June 2005 at the abandoned Hitachi Zosen Corporation shipyard in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture.
  • Approximately 600 million yen was spent on building the sets, a full-scale, one-to-one ship mockup, and the port's air defense system. Plywood and fiberglass were used as building materials. The structures of the starboard side, the stern section, and the guns of Turret A were not created because the events of the film take place precisely on the ship's starboard side.
  • 26 people who served on the «Yamato» acted as consultants during the creation of the film about the legendary battleship.
