Short description
Cold Mountain is set during the American Civil War. Inman, a wounded Confederate soldier, leaves his unit and sets out on a long and dangerous journey through the South to reach the North Carolina town of Cold Mountain and the woman he loves, Ada. The two had known each other only briefly before the war separated them. As Inman travels, facing a landscape scarred by conflict and encountering people who may help or harm him, Ada struggles to keep her late father's farm going on her own. Her situation changes when Ruby, a capable young drifter, arrives to help her, and the two women work the land together while Ada waits for news of Inman.
The film was directed and written by Anthony Minghella, following The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley, and produced by Sydney Pollack and William Horberg. It is based on Charles Frazier's novel. Jude Law plays Inman and Nicole Kidman plays Ada, with Renée Zellweger as Ruby. The cast also includes Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Made on a budget of about 79 million dollars, it took roughly 173 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 164,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from about 2,030 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 226 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
