Short description
A biplane pilot and WWI veteran takes up barnstorming and later a movie career in his quest for the glory days he misses.
What's left behind the scenes
- There are no composite shots in the film. All close-ups of the actors were filmed live—sometimes with director George Roy Hill (1921-2002), who had once served in the air force himself. The scenes in which the characters played by Robert Redford and Bo Svenson climb onto the wing of the plane were filmed without safety harnesses.
- At the beginning of the film, Waldo describes an aerial battle with Kessler, stating that his weapons jammed and that Kessler, realizing what had happened, saluted him by rocking his wings and flew away. A similar story actually happened once to German military pilot Ernst Udet (1896-1941) in 1917, when French fighter ace Georges Guynemer (1894-1917) chose not to finish him off.
