The In-Laws

The In-Laws is a 1979 American comedy directed by Arthur Hiller. Sheldon Kornpett, a mild-mannered Manhattan dentist, meets Vince Ricardo, the father of the man his daughter is about to marry. Vince claims to work for the government and quickly pulls Sheldon into a chaotic chain of pursuits and mishaps that carry the pair from New York to Central America, where they become entangled with a corrupt dictator, General Garcia. The film was written by Andrew Bergman, with Hiller and William Sackheim producing.

Hiller made the film in the middle of his directing career, between Silver Streak and Author! Author!, the eighth of seventeen features he directed. Peter Falk plays Vince opposite Alan Arkin as Sheldon, with Richard Libertini as Garcia, and Nancy Dussault, Penny Peyser and Arlene Golonka among the supporting cast. Warner Bros. Pictures released the film, which runs 103 minutes and mixes action, adventure, comedy, crime and mystery. It cost about 9 million dollars and earned roughly 38 million worldwide, a solid return.
